The Tree of Light
In 1991, the families and friends of hospice patients cared for by Visiting Nurse Services of Connecticut first gathered together during the
holiday season to remember their departed loved ones at a simple tree lighting ceremony on a single town green. Word spread and a tradition was established.
This year, on December 13th, VNS will host its 22nd Annual Tree of Light ceremonies in 11 communities throughout Fairfield and New Haven counties.
For many families who have lost a loved one during the year, the holiday season can be an especially emotional time. The Tree of Light ceremony provides a
communal opportunity to remember loved ones at this very special time of year. At each ceremony, family members, friends and neighbors of the deceased come
together in the truest sense of the season to acknowledge their loss and to celebrate the spirit and honor the memory of their relatives and loved ones.
Tree of Light ceremonies in each town include a Memorial Roll of the names of the deceased, music and a brief reading, an inspirational tree lighting, and a
hosted reception.
Many families mark the occasion by contributing a symbolic memorial light to their community’s Tree of Light. These contributions benefit VNS’ Hospice at
Home™ program and allow VNS to provide compassionate care and comfort for individuals and families in need, who may not have other care options as they
face their final journey. The memorial lights, in colors of green, blue and white, symbolize the comfort, dignity and peace provided by the professional staff
and volunteers of VNS’ Hospice at Home™ program.
